What a good cover letter says

A cover letter does not repeat your resume: it connects it to a specific job. Three paragraphs are enough. The first says what you are applying for and how you found it. The second proves, with a real example, that you can do the job: one result with numbers beats three adjectives. The third explains why that company specifically, and closes by asking for an interview.

Mistakes that get it discarded

  • Leaving another company’s name. It is the most common mistake when reusing a letter, and the easiest to spot.
  • Repeating the resume line by line. If it is already in the resume, only what relates to this job belongs in the letter.
  • Empty stock phrases. “I am proactive and a team player” says nothing; a concrete example does.
  • Going over one page. 150 to 250 words is the range that actually gets read.

Do you always need one?

On job portals it is often optional, and the first filter is a system reading your resume. When you write directly to a company, by email or messaging, the letter matters: it is your only chance to explain why you want that job. If the posting asks for one, always send it, because leaving it out reads as lack of interest.
